Dates

1979

A guest house of 500 square feet replacing one of similar size destroyed by the Malibu fire.

Adjacent to an existing primary residence, a hip roofed stucco box, on a 20 acre site overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Symmetry and asymmetry.

Kinship: the existing house; the destroyed house; the new house.

Continuity and discontinuity -- inside versus outside.

First level: big space small space; social/solitary.

Second floor: bath, seats.

Curved roof wall: corrugated steel. Then, plaster, wood, dry wall.

Concrete plinth.

Essentially an introverted building on an extroverted site.

House: to look in.

Roof deck: to look out (and in).
